Jerry Garcia had just died and it occurred to me that he was missing a finger and I had all of mine. That's how it started. The middle verse is inspired by the toltec teachings.
Call it superstition
Full moon coming 'round
This is my position
somewhere off the ground
Sometimes I try so hard
I see the yard is full of dirt
and I want to move away
(But) the night is young
the moon is full and I've got
all my fingers
all I want to do is play
Another recolllection
I'll show you what I've found
I've made a new connection
I see another sound
There's time for you to see the movement in the trees
and I will sing the shadow's song
Death always stays so near
yet there's no fear
if you just have the will
to move along
There is one condition
I've got to pass along
Though there's opposition
I've got to sing this song
There's a feeling in the air
and though I care about today
we've come a long, long way
(But) right now I've got to move, got to groove
got all my fingers
all I want to do is play
